Topic:
This course explores the role of nutrition in periodontal health. Specifically, effects of fiber, vitamin C, and omega 3 fatty acids in immune system health will be explored. Nutritional aspects of periodontal surgery and components of nutritional counseling are discussed.

Objectives:
1. Identify the role nutrition plays in periodontal health and disease.
2. Describe nutritional considerations of necrotizing periodontal diseases
3. List the effects of food consistency and composition in periodontal disease.
4. Discuss the components of nutritional counseling for the periodontal client.
5. List major differences between full liquid, mechanical soft, bland, and regular diets.

Speaker:
Anahita Mortazavi, BSND, BSDH, RDH, M.Ed. is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Dental Hygiene at the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. She graduated from the University of Texas School of Allied Health at Houston in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics. In 2011, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Texas Dental Branch. She completed a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston. She has been practicing clinical dental hygiene since 2011. She is a member of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association, the American Dental Education Association, the Dental Hygiene Educators of Texas, and the American Academy of Laser Dentistry.
