This year’s annual “Sealants Across Texas” was held Saturday, October 23, 2004 at the San Jose Spring Branch Clinic. We were able to service 22 children with sealants, fluoride treatments and oral hygiene instructions. Altogether we placed 115 sealants!  I think the volunteers learned from this project how rewarding it can be to help underprivileged children. Nearly all of the children seen had active decay. By placing sealants on their healthy teeth we were able to prevent many future cavities. Without volunteers and generous donations from our dental suppliers we would not have been able to serve our children in need. I want to thank all of the wonderful volunteers.

The RDH volunteers were: Shirley Cross, Debbie Simecek, Tiffany Winkelman, Cody Fuentes, Gina Garton, and Tina Lopez.

UT Dental Hygiene students who asssisted were: Kathy Kirtley, Ngoc Nguyen, Karen Foster, Trang Tran, Nga Nguyen, Mai Truong, Zhi Li, Alma Rodriquez, Michelle Kornett, and Jessica Clements.

A special thanks to Betty Waedemon and Tatiana Ramirez for help in obtaining volunteers.

The San Jose Clinic is always seeking new RDH volunteers to provide hygiene services to children and adults at the downtown or Spring Branch clinics. If interested call (713)228-9411.  Holly Koehn, RDH Dental Health Chair

Sealant Report:

This year’s “Sealants Across Texas” was another great success!  It was held Saturday, October 25 at the San Jose Spring Branch Clinic.  We were able to serve 28 children.  Altogether we placed 123 sealants.  This annual state wide project will always remind us of the large need of preventive hygiene services for many underserved children.  It is an honor that our society can make an effort in preventing dental caries.  Without volunteers and generous donations from our dental suppliers we would not have been able to serve our children in need.  I want to thank all of the wonderful volunteers.

The RDH volunteers were:  Michelle Cullins, Hope Garza, Andrea Scott, Mimi Bach, Marsha Krutsinger, Suzy Stevens, Stephanie Bass, Betty Waedemon, Angelique Adams, Kim Hanford, Mary Anne Harmer, and Antoinette Robins who also brought her daughter Heather to assist. UT Dental Hygiene students who assisted were:  Amber Ragland, Leslie Ng, Christina Cole, Anna Miner, Tina Vasquez, Thanh Nguyen, and Heather Wilson.

I  would like to add  special thanks Mimi Bach and Michelle Cullins for helping obtain the dental supplies for this event and Phyllis Parrot for donating children’s Colgate products.
